Home insurance policies provide a package of protection comprised of six types of coverage:

  • Dwelling: Pays for damage to your home and any attached structures, including an attached garage or deck.
  • Other Structures: Pays for damage to detached structures on the premises including fences, storage sheds, or a detached garage.
  • Personal Property: Covers the contents of your home including furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing, dishware, and personal effects.
  • Loss of Use: Covers additional living expenses if your home is uninhabitable due to a covered loss and you are temporarily forced to stay somewhere else while your home is being repaired.
  • Personal Liability: Provides financial protection in the event you or a family member are responsible for injuries or damage to someone else.
  • Medical Payments: Provides first dollar medical benefits, regardless of fault, if a non-household member is injured while visiting your home.

The limit of each coverage is typically based on the amount of dwelling coverage and can be adjusted as needed.

Whenever it’s available you should look for replacement coverage for your home and personal belongings – this means any loss would be settled based on the cost new for like kind and quality items.

You should also ask about and be aware of any coverage limitations.

For example, personal property coverage provides very limited protection for money, jewelry, artwork, and collectibles.

And most items for which separate insurance is available including cars, recreational vehicles, and watercraft are not covered by your home policy – regardless of whether they’re parked in your garage.
